ABOUT ME

20170207_204553.jpg

I graduated in 2018 with my Masters in Game Development with a focus on Rigging from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I got a job at Razor Edge Games shortly after and quickly learned how much I did not know--how to rig a quadruped's spine, for instance.

When I started my masters, my Python skills were non-existent--I was even afraid of working in it--and my rigging skills were there but better, but still rather poor. I still enjoyed it, even if I wasn't great at it. During my time in school, I faced my Python fear, I also took a creature rigging class with a teacher that was actually a rigger--previously, I suspect any rigging teachers I had were more 3D generalists and only knew the basics of rigging. I enjoyed that because he helped me get over my fear of using scripting in rigs and really made me leaps and bounds better than I was.

I have been asked why I chose rigging. The answer is simple: it is challenging and has little artistic interpretation. I also enjoy the problem solving. I honestly enjoy what I do. If I choose a model for a personal project (which basically every rig here is), I choose one that has some interest to me--doesn't mean I won't rig a model I would constitute as "boring", I just wouldn't choose it on my own. A lot of the models on this site are Blizzard models because A: I can get them for free, B: the quality is consistent (can't say that for free models off Turbosquid), and C: I've been playing Blizzard games since I was 6 or 7 and I was playing Warcraft 2. Also, I am currently prohibited from posting the rigs I have done for Razor Edge.

While I have yet to be asked to rig anything very complicated--probably because I'm not on a cinematics team--I would face a challenging model with joy instead of trepidation now--I think the most complicated rig I've heard of was the rig for the machine in the Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty announcement trailer that put the marine suit on Tychus; if I remember correctly, I heard that had over 400 controls.

Coming from a point of having no Python skills and poor rigging skills, I have now written two lengthy, entirely soft-coded Python tools--both of which you can see on the "PYTHON TOOLS" page--as well as have a custom window with a whole slew of simple tools and automations (granted, some I got off Google and some from a class, but have edited them to work for myself). My rigs can speak for themselves for how good they are. My personal opinion is that they are pretty good, at least for my current level.

I was testing an idea to use nCloth in lieu of joints for the webbing on Illidan's wings.
